If you’ve found your way to this fantastic site then I’m going to assume you own, or are considering cichlids in your aquarium.  Pronounced (sik’lid), they are defined as freshwater fishes of tropical America, Africa and Asia similar to American sunfishes; some are food fishes.  Cichlids range in size from 1 to 30 inches in length.

Many people have a certain understanding of the effort it takes to hunt, find, clean and prepare these rocks for sale on the website. But I suspect that many others don’t realize how difficult it is sometimes to find the spectacular rock that we put up for sale. We have a couple of articles on the website already talking about it, but I thought it would be good to bring along the video camera on a hunt, so you can see just what typically happens and what goes through my mind when I’m looking for your rocks.

I went hunting on Sunday April 29, 2007. The location I filmed at is one of several places I go to get the rocks I put on the website. It is not the most difficult terrain where I hunt rocks – I don’t want to destroy my camera if I fall or drop it negotiating the tough terrain of my most difficult quarries! This particular location took me over 2 months to locate.

There are several reasons why holey rock is so expensive.  One of the main reasons is that it's just not that easy to get ahold of the great rocks we show for sale on the web site.  It's important to realize that the rocks we show are the best of the best.  We select for suitability with the aquarium and to make sure that your cichlids will fit in the holes.

On top of that, is the various hazards and difficulties we face when we're out in the woods hunting for your holey rocks.  We have to contend with tripping hazards, poison oak, fire ants, thorns, vines and the searing Texas heat in search of the best holey rocks.  Read more below if you'd like to come along on a typical rock hunt.
